MY STORY
I’m John Chabot, an Anishinabeg Algonquin from Kitigan Zibi First Nation, and a former professional athlete and coach with 22 years of experience, including 12 years in the NHL. After retiring, I discovered a new passion for working with Indigenous youth across Canada, traveling from coast to coast to coast since 2001.

I used hockey as a way to build relationships based on trust and respect, and the hockey clinics I taught evolved into important hockey and education conversations, which eventually led to the creation of First Assist. I’ve also had the privilege of helping organize the NHL Indigenous Alumni team and contributing to TV hockey shows that spotlight Indigenous youth and their potential.
