DR MAIA HETARAKA

Maia is Indigenous to Aotearoa New Zealand and brings deep expertise in mātauranga Māori, education, and Indigenous approaches to justice. With a background in primary teaching and extensive research leadership, her work centres Indigenous knowledges as pathways for social, educational, and ecological change. Maia is a lecturer and Director at Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland and is deeply connected to her Tai Tokerau community, schools, and whānau.

MY STORY

Maia is Indigenous to Aotearoa New Zealand. She is interested in Māori and Indigenous knowledges and approaches that contribute to justice in education practice, pedagogy and policies. Her particular interests are in understanding ways that Māori and Indigenous knowledges can impact on, and provide solutions to contemporary social, educational and political issues. Maia has expertise in mātauranga Māori and in the historical realities that continue to impact socio-political and socio-ecological spaces. Maia is currently co-principle investigator for a Health Research Council project, a Marsden project, a TLRI and a Ngā Pae o te Maramatanga Matakitenga grant. She has a primary school teaching background and is a well-respected educator. Maia has three daughters and two mokopuna (grandchildren). She is currently a lecturer and Director for the Faculty of Arts and Education at Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland, Te Papa Ako o te Tai Tokerau, Tai Tokerau Campus. She resides in Tai Tokerau where she is well connected to the first nation collectives, schools and the wider community.
